Doctors at SMHS continued their strike on to a 5th day after hospital administration failed to pursue them to end the strike. Doctors at SMHS Hospital have been on strike since Dec 18th after two on duty doctors were thrashed by attendents of the patient over death of an elderly patient.

The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) called the strike demanding better security for doctors at the hospital and also steps to improve health care facilities. The RDA has sought a comprehensive security plan for the doctors as well as paramedical staff.

While the OPD has remained non-functional, essential emergency services have continued to operate at the hospital. The hospital administration in a bid to end the strike held a three hour long meeting with the RDA at SMHS. The meeting was attended by various senior members of the medical fraternity as well as HoDs of various departments.

The issues being raised by doctors include – setting up of an intense security plan and implementing it, providing hospital security on the premises and pushin for a legislation of an Ordinance that makes assault on doctors a non-bailable offence. The strike is expected to continue till concrete steps are. A positive outcome is expected within the next day or two even as doctors continue to agitate.
