To look into assaults carried out against doctors, the Central government has created a committee. This was made possible after the Indian Medical Association gave a representation which highlighted the need for a legislation that protects doctors from such attacks.

The committee was made up of representatives from the Law and Justice Ministry, Home Ministry, Department of Consumer Affairs, Medical Council of India as well as Indian Medical Association.

The terms of reference of the committee include frequent assaults on doctors and the requirement for laws that protect them. Also inlcuded are amendments to the PNDT Act so that penalties are imposed only in cases of actual sex determination as opposed to clerical errors on maintaining registers.

As for other terms, they include amendments to the Consumer Protection Act so that compensation amount is capped and also prohibiting doctors without MBBS or BDS from prescribing medicines.
