The doctors joining Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) will now be taught a course in teaching. Besides medical teachers training, the course shall include communication skills and humanities.
The teacher training will only be for those PGI doctors who are interested to teach. Apart from that, there will be five new fellowships of Rs.5 lakh each for young faculty members who can travel anywhere in the world for their research work. The PGI grants two types of research: intramural (given by the institute) and extramural (by external agencies like ICMR, DST, DBT).
“We want to encourage the young faculty members who are keen in doing research. Hence, we started this intramural grant. The aim is to enhance the quality of research,” said prof Arvind Rajwanshi, dean, research, PGI. “It is not necessary that if someone becomes a doctor, he/she is a trained teacher. We had this training course some 10 and 15 years ago which was stopped. We will revive it again,” he added.
The PGI has over 500 faculty members and they teach MD/DM students. The students trained from the institute travel across the country and even offshore. “The training will be for 15 days where we will have international and national faculty for teaching the doctors here,” said prof Rajwanshi.
In order to give importance to the research, PGI has taken a new step. “In the past, researchers had to apply for the grants before the end of the financial year. Now there is no such deadline,” said a faculty.
All the initiatives will be implemented by this year-end.
