A number of suggestions have been made by Dr P P Venugopalan to the ministry of health and family welfare. The suggestions are for establishing an effective emergency medical care in India to handle the emergency cases. Now, the doctor has received positive response from the ministry, reports the Time of India. The doctor is the executive director of ANGELS(Active Network Group of Emergency Lifesavers).

The doctor submitted the suggestions through the government of India portal meant for central public grievance redress and monitoring system(CPGRAMS) on February, 23, 2017. This was done after the controversy regarding emergency care got raised following the demise of E Ahamed MP. He suffered a cardiac arrest within the Parliament.

Dr Venugopalan sought the central government’s attention on the importance of establishing a quality emergency care and also to provide better training, and equipping the system from the Parliament to the primary health centres.

Swachh Bharat-like project

The doctor also suggested the government to execute a Swachh Bharat-like project in the health sector that would help create public awareness. Another suggestion is to improve the existing emergency response pre-hospital care system and also the need to introduce national ambulance system. Introducing community based ambulance network would augment emergency access at affordable cost, as per the doctor.

Other suggestions include introducing national guidelines for emergency room and ICU resuscitation protocol and also forming a national level committee to review it in hospitals across India.

Another point on which Dr Venugopalan has sought the government’s intervention is in making basic life support training programme mandatory in school syllabus. Advanced life support training should be added in medical syllabus, he added. The doctor urged the government to take steps to ensure that every healthcare provider undergoes effective communication skills training.

As per the doctor, he has got a reply which mentions that the suggestions have been received by the prime minister’s office and have been forwarded to the Department of Health and Family Welfare.

“I am hopeful that the government will takes steps to address the matters to improve the existing emergency medical care in the country and to put in place an effective system,” he said.
