31 year old Dr Rohan Mhamukar who was assaulted by patient’s kin on Sunday in Dhule, Maharashtra has reached his Mumbai home, seeking treatment for the grave injuries he sustained.

“I wish I had taken up engineering instead of medicine. I qualified for both courses,” said the doctor.
Dr Rohan is to meet the dean of JJ Hospital, Dr T P Lahane. Dr Lahane is an authority in ophthalmology. He is expected to provide an opinion on Dr Rohan’s condition on Wednesday.

According to Dr Lahane, Dr Rohan has cause to worry. “His brain scan shows a fracture in the left eye orbit. The fracture is not in itself worrisome, but it could affect his optic nerve and that could lead to vision loss,” he said.

Dr Rohan, understandably shaken, said, “I don’t have a clear memory of the events that occurred on Sunday night. There were many men attacking me for stating that their relative should be taken to a centre that had a neurologist or neurosurgeon.”

The angry mob took the doctor’s two cell phones and broke them into pieces.

Move to Dhule for “experience in a rural setting”

Dr Rohan passed out of the K J Somaiya Medical College. He finished his DNB in orthopaedics from Jupiter Hospital, Thane, after which he took up the stint in Dhule as a senior resident doctor. “I wanted experience in a rural setting, but I, and my parents, have now suffered the worst experience of our lives,” he said.

In fact, it was his mother who urged him to take medicine. “She has worked in hospitals in a clerical capacity and wanted me to be a doctor,” he said.

However, after Sunday’s incident, the first thing she conveyed to him was how she wished she didn’t ask him to take up medicine.

Following the attack, doctors of Maharashtra are on a silent protest today, demanding better security for doctors in government hospitals. As per the state chapter of IMI’s youth wing, in 2016, 47 instances of assault against doctors took place in Maharashtra.

Accused found dead in lockup

Meanwhile, one of the accused arrested for the assault was found dead in police lock-up. As per the police, Pradip Sadashiv Vetale committed suicide as he hung himself on Tuesday. The DGP has ordered a CID inquiry. “The CID has been handed over the investigation and it has collected CCTV footage of the lock-up where the accused was lodged.

The post-mortem report is expected Wednesday, which will ascertain the cause of death,” said Dhule SP Chaitanya S.
