The government doctors in Punjab are expressing their distress about recruiting doctors under the Punjab Civil Medical Services on just the basic pay. In this regard, the state body of the Punjab Civil Medical Services Association(PCMSA) has said that a state level protest rally will be held against the government today at Jalandhar.

The decision for the rally was taken in the senate meeting of the PCMSA state body. Government doctors from across Punjab will take take part in the protest rally, said Dr, Gagandeep Singh, the state president of PCMSA.

Dr. Singh added that the the decision for the rally was made since the state government has not withdrawn the state cabinet’s decision to recruit government doctors under PCMS on basic pay. As per Dr. Singh, the salary of Rs.15,600 which is what a Medical doctor- a gazetted post receives is “a joke within the profession of doctors.”

Cracking the entrance exam to get into the MBBS course is hard, he said. And they also have to shell out a huge amount of money during the education. Then, clearing the degree is also a challenge. These hurdles are overcome just because of their goal to become a doctor but the state government ruins the dreams of these doctors fresh into the profession, he said, urging doctors to participate in the rally.

Dr. Gagandeep Singh also said that a representation will soon be sent to the state government with the appeal not to take action against the doctors on strike.

The PCMSA body, at the senate meeting made it clear that they are determined to fight both for the patient’s welfare and the rights of its cadre.

The State body has also urged the Chief Minister to personally intervene at the earliest, so that he can listen to the young doctors who risk their jobs for the sake of a genuine demand.
