In response to yet another assault on a resident doctor of the GMC, Aurangabad, MARD doctors have gone on an indefinite strike since today morning. This is after the police failed to take action against three accused involved in attacking resident duty doctor Dr. Sunil Kamble on Sunday.

The patient, 80-year-old Syed Khwaja Moinuddin was brought to the GMCH on Sunday night with convulsions. A CT scan done revealed an infarct and the doctors advised that the patient be admitted; but the kin was against it.

The patient’s condition worsened due to weak respiration and intubation was done immediately, to which the patient did not respond. Despite the best efforts from doctors to revive him, the patient was declared dead at 1:30 a.m.

At this point, relatives of the patient beat up Dr. Kamble, a second year resident doctor who was on emergency duty. Following the incident, MARD president Vikram Rathod filed a police complaint with the Begumpura police and threatened that if the accused were not arrested within 24 hours, MARD would go on a strike from Tuesday morning.

This is the 10th assault on doctors in Maharasthra this year and the fourth this month, after the July 3rd MARD strike was called off. One of the ten demands of MARD is the safety and security of doctors.

Despite the fact that doctors have been demanding implementation of the Doctors Protection Act and that action be taken against offending persons under the rule, there seems to be no effective implementation from the concerned authorities. Verbal assurances fall short of promises made and doctors continue their lonely fight against the injustice towards them.

The assault on doctor was captured on the CCTV camera. Click below to watch the video:
