The DCI (Dental Council of India) has proposed a bridge course for dental graduates to become MBBS doctors. The DCI feels the effect would be two fold – one, provide jobs for dental graduates and two, address the acute shortage of doctors across India. The bridge course proposal has been framed with help from the MCI and would be placed before the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for consideration soon.

DCI President Dr. D Majumdar stated that dental and medical students walked the same path for the first two years of their course. This bridge course would eliminate the academic gap between the two streams adn help dental students become MBBS doctors.

Public health activist, Bobby Ramamkant stated that the accute shortage of MBBS doctors was the biggest problem faced in quality service delivery. Hew went on to state that 85% of the posts in community health centers were vacant while 15,000 dental graduates across India remained jobless. The bridge course could be a solution to both issues. With rural health statistics showing huge vacancies of – 83% in surgery, 76% in obstretics and gynaecology and 82% in paediatrics across community health centers, this bridge course would also curb the menace of quacks.

The lack of jobs among dental graduates is no a small issue. While a research paper in the International Society for Preventive and COmmunity Dentistry says there should be 1 dentist for every 7,500 people; 2004 figures show that there is 1 dentist for every 30,000 in India. This figure remains true even today.

With over 3,000 students graduating from various dental colleges just in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the job market is quite dull. Not every student can afford to start his or her own private practice right after graduation. A lack of demand and opportunities makes their skills technically redundant.

At present, a bridge course for MBBS doctors who want to become dentists exists. The MBBS to BDS condensed course allows doctors to take up PG courses in dentistry later. This new proposal is asking for a reversal, but passing this proposal is easier said than done.

  4. Who told MBBS and BDS students walked same path for two years..
Its not like that. Only Physiology subject is some what similar in both.
And also BDS students have only head and neck part in anatomy (1st year).
BDS students don’t have anatomy upper limb, lower limb, thorax, abdomen to study, which is primary thing to study.
Without knowing basic things how can a BDS students do MBBS practise.
Its not safe to take chance with people life.

    • good morning doctors, and first of all i am here to remind that 5-8 years back most of us here as doctors and dentist or paramedics are basically a higher secondary student aspiring towards mbbs, but all of a sudden once we get into the seperate medical stream we are fighting for its betterment. this competition is healthy, but we forget the reality. in this country the government medical college isfor the reserved groups and the private colleges for wealthier groups, the unreserved ones have to take what remains it may be mbbs, bds, bpharm, etc,. everyone here should understand that healthcare professional are all the same and should work with mutual understanding for the betterment of patients. irrespective of this divisions, there was not much problem in the earlierdays when there were less private institutions and these degrees were not sold for lakhs ands crores, though reservations were there in the past but was limited to 4 categories but the presentsituations in some state is that there are 8-9 categories but only 2-3 pg seats in government colleges. Im not against thesereservations but im afraid of its consequences to the unreserved groups infuture. I will remind you that the bds even mds graduates are not getting job in colleges and these colleges are demanding payless work for handing the experience certificate. maximum salary of bds graduate workin gin private clinic is 4000 for full time, and there are very few govt jobs for bds, more over the bds degree is not recognised else where out of country, imagine guys after bds or even after postgraduation this remains same, one has to start by joining in dental degree program and study for 4 years. I am neither for or against this bridge course as this will not make much difference to the unreserved category. instead of this please authorities take actions to increase govt jobs to dentist or MOU for foreign licensure ,god please save indian dentist from this menace ,,,, thank you

  8. It would be good. Coz many of our seniors working in the rural areas complain of skill shortage in gynae, pedia, gen. surgery, meds. Authorities expect us to perform n treat as needs of the people neccesitates.

  9. Bridge course should not be permitted to BDS graduated to MBBS. This will not serve any purpose. BDS Students passed through different way and mentally prepared to concentrate only on specific area right from the staze of Anatomy etc. So this will disturbe present system. Additional medical seats to be created. Instead reduce intake of Dental and increase intake of MBBS.
AT ANY COST THIS PROPOSAL FOR BRIDGE COURSE SHOULD NOT BE PERMITTED.

  13. I agree for this excellent idea, actually in many countries are offering this BDS to MBBS with good course duration and it will be supporting for health care for them countries, and also in India still have more number of fake certified doctors and under qualified doctors who were doing services in rural areas, so we can encourage the BDS students they well practicing during the 5 year period and they can learn about the Medical field also, and this is good idea to improve our India in the medical field and health care to the human beings.
