At around 1 AM Thursday, docs from Bengaluru travelled to Tamil Nadu with an ailing patient who required liver transplant. The donor, who was declared brain dead on Wednesday after he suffered head injuries in a crash, was from Erode in TN.

The docs from Manipal Hospital travelled with the patient in a Karnataka-registered ambulance till TN border. Tearing off the wheelchair fixed to the ambulance, they had the patient sit on it and wheeled it for a kilometer in the darkness. A TN registered ambulance was waiting for them on the other side.

“It would have been very easy to decline the liver offer from Tamil Nadu, given the tension in both states. If we had done that, we would have disregarded the donor’s wish of gifting a new life in death. We were tense, but decided to ignore the risk to the medical team,”the doctor in charge later said to a newspaper.
